Durban: 30 injured in new year crashes

EMERGENCY services treated 30 people, including six children, who were injured in road-related accidents on new year’s morning in Durban.

This is according to Rescue Care Paramedics who said the toll was recorded from three separate incidents all involving taxis.

Paramedics responded to a crash on Shepstone Road and Morrison Street where a bakkie had collided with a taxi carrying passengers. Of the 12 people injured, six were identified as children.

“Immediately, more ambulances were dispatched to assist. Once the injured had been stabilised they were transported to hospital,” said Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care.

In another separate incident,  just before 5:30am, paramedics  responded to an accident in which two taxis collided on Market Road, near the taxi rank. On arrival, they treated five people who had sustained various injuries and were transported to hospital.

Lastly, at around 7:30 am, 13 people had to be treated on the scene of Jan Smuts Highway and Buro Crescent after a taxi somehow left the road before crashing into a traffic light and becoming stuck on top of it. Paramedics had to stabilise the injured passengers before transferring them to nearby hospitals.

No fatalities have been reported.
