Mamba Mia! Lucky escape for pet rabbit
A Black Mamba was removed from a rabbit hutch in the Glenwood area on Sunday.
A RABBIT was lucky to live another day after being rescued by its owner before becoming lunch for a black mamba.
Nick Evans from KwaZulu-Natal Amphibian and Reptile Conservation said just before his father in law’s birthday lunch on Sunday, he received a call from Hennie Naudé from Glenwood about a black mamba which was spotted in a rabbit cage.

“My wife, Joelle did not give me a loving gaze as I said that I had to go, promising I’d be back before the lunch, but I just had to. We’re shooting for a television series, and the cameraman and I have been on about seven Black Mamba calls together, and haven’t caught any. I arrived at the house in Howard Drive and thought I must be at the wrong address as it was so built up, so urban, but it was indeed the right house. I later checked Google Earth and noticed Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve is close-by, and I know there’s mambas in that tiny reserve, which has always interested me,” he said.
Nick said there was no rabbit in the cage as it had already been rescued by its owner, Marlize Visagie, who he said was very brave, snatching food from a mamba!
“This was no baby mamba, it was around 2.5m and bulky. The terrified creature was trying to get out through the mesh of the floor, but it had no chance. I pinned it down and had it secured pretty quickly. It did put up a bit of a struggle, it was a powerful beast, which felt like it had spent some time in the hot sun,” he said, adding that finally they had the mamba capture on camera, and he made it back in time for the birthday lunch.
