Two cellphone thieves arrested in Durban, appear in court

Quick response by police led to the arrest of two robbers in Durban last week.

ALERT Durban Central SAPS officers arrested two suspects within an hour of them committing a crime in the Durban CBD last week.

According to Capt Muzi Maphumulo, Durban Central SAPS spokesperson, on Tuesday, 18 February at around 11.45am, a woman was walking along Dr Pixley kaSeme Street in Durban when she was accosted by two men who threatened her with a knife and robbed her of a cellphone.

“A police van patrolling the area was stopped by the complainant immediately after the robbery. The woman told the police in which direction the suspects had gone and the officers gave chase. The suspects were arrested within an hour after the incident. The woman’s cellphone and an Okapi knife were recovered,” said Maphumulo.

The suspects were detained at Durban Central Police Station and made their first appearance in court on Friday, facing charges of robbery, possession of presumably stolen property and possession of a dangerous weapon.
