Port encourages youth development

THIRTY students from various universities returned to Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) recently as part of the youth development and exposure programme AIM.

The students participated in a competitive event where they developed solutions to the company’s training and development challenges using a human-centred design thinking approach. “There’s something very inspiring about a group of young people who have never been exposed to a work environment yet manage to develop solutions that help an established business,” said acting general manager of human resources, Brenda Magqwaka.

The group suggested the development of a training application (App) to limit the absence of critical resources in operations, where training can be accessed during a time available to employees. The students also reintroduced on-the-job training, enhancing it in a way that suits employees while satisfying operational requirements. The ideas were complemented by creative approaches that spark interest and encourage completion for end users.

“Interacting with the students makes one realise that South Africa’s future is very bright and the fourth industrial revolution has already begun changing the way we do things for maximum impact,” said Magqwaka.
