JOMBA! dance festival gears up for jam-packed final weekend

Through the theme, Border Crossings, the festival looks at dance-makers, dance companies and performance-based artists.

THERE is still plenty to watch this weekend at the 23rd JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience which ends on Sunday, September 5. Presented by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, JOMBA! is taking place virtually this year. 

Through the theme, Border Crossings, the festival looks at dance-makers, dance companies and performance-based artists who resonate with the idea of geographical, emotional, physical, spiritual and performative boarder crossings, explained JOMBA! Artistic Director Dr Lliane Loots. 

“We are proud to host a digital space that nurtures and supports a serious artistic engagement with South African, African and international contemporary dance and dance makers,” added Loots.

What’s on

German-Chinese choreographer, Hannah Ma presents ONDA – into the unknown, an art space production, at 19.00 on Friday, September 3. She will also be in conversation with  Loots on Saturday, September 4 at 15.00.

Audiences can watch Indian Crossings on Saturday, September 4 , presented by the Durban Indian Consulate’s Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and Calcutta dance company, the Pickle Factory Dance Foundation. This platform showcase eight specially curated short dance films that speak to the zeitgeist of contemporary Indian dance making. 

On Sunday, September 5 Loots will be in conversation with Vikram Iyengar and Kunal Chakraborty from the Pickle Factory Dance Foundation. 

Also available to watch until Sunday September 5 is Cape Town’s Yaseen Manuel who is the UKZN’s School of the Arts/Mellon Foundation’s Artist in Residence. He works in conjunction with JOMBA! to create two screen dance films with Durban’s much loved Flatfoot Dance Company.

The festival closes at 19.00 on Sunday with She Poems created by Spanish dancer and choreographer, Aïda Colemenero Dïaz. This is a series of short dance films made during her on-going travels in Africa.

Also available on the JOMBA! platform is a digital exhibition by Durban photographer, Val Adamson. The exhibition features 100 photos of celebrated choreographer Jay Pather’s work with Siwela Sonke.
