‘Armed’ robbers steal cellphone with a toy gun

Police arrested the suspects, who had a toy gun in their possession, and recovered the cellphone in Umlazi.

THREE suspects robbed a man of his cellphone on Marshall Road in Umbilo at 14:00 on Wednesday, September 8.

According to provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the suspects held the victim up before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

“The victim alleged that he was walking on Marshall Road when a vehicle stopped next to him. Three men alighted and pointed a firearm at him. At gunpoint, the suspects grabbed his cellphone and drove off. A description of the vehicle was given to police officers and circulated to neighboring police stations.”

Gwala said the suspects’ vehicle was later spotted by Umlazi police officers who were traveling on Himalayas Road towards Lamontville.

“The vehicle was stopped and three suspects, aged between 21 and 24, were arrested. A toy gun was found in the suspect’s possession. The victim’s cellphone was also recovered. The suspects will appear in court soon on charges of robbery,” concluded Gwala.
