Berea SAPS urges residents to be crime conscious

Berea SAPS made several arrests this week and have urged residents to follow a few of its safety tips to avoid becoming a target.

AFTER a week of arrests, Berea SAPS has shared important personal safety awareness tips.

Speaking to the Berea Mail, spokesperson for the Berea SAPS, Captain Poobalan Naidoo said it is important to be crime-conscious and be aware of the risk of crime at all times.

Safety precautions for personal safety:

  • Never walk around alone and do not talk to strangers. Be on the lookout for strange cars or people.
  • Walk in well-lit, busy streets and in a group, if possible.
  • Make sure your home is secure, and join an armed response service. Be sure that you know all of the emergency numbers, or have them readily available.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be away. However, think twice before advertising your absence and plans on social media. Criminals also have access to Facebook and Twitter
  • Avoid going onto a busy, blocked street as this where is where you will find pickpockets.
  • Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them.

Naidoo said there were several arrests made this week, including four arrests for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen, five arrests for undocumented persons, one for robbery, one theft and one possession of drugs.

“In recoveries, we have recovered a motor vehicle, drugs, wheel caps, knife, clothing, gym bag and a ladder,” he added.
