City promotes cohesion through art

This event features included a visual art exhibition, a book launch as well as music from a few of Durban's rising stars.

THE eThekwini Municipality recently hosted the Art in the Park event to celebrate creative art at Jameson Park, Florida Road.

The event aims to showcase the talents of local artists and the rich cultural background of our unique city.

According to the community services committee member from the eThekwini Municipality, Ntokozo Sibiya, the gathering included local artists especially visual artist’s.

“We have given a number of young people within our city an opportunity to showcase their work and a chance to network,” she said.

Sibiya said the aim was to give other artists an opportunity to showcase their talent at next year’s show.

Acting head of Parks, Recreation and Culture at the eThekwini Municipality, Vusi Mazibuko said the event celebrated and promoted the work of local artists.

“We have a responsibility to make sure that our culture and heritage is promoted and protected. We want to make sure that it is used to create job opportunities, showcase talent and attract tourists to Durban,” he said.

He added that the creative arts industry has faced numerous challenges because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Local high school learners from different parts of the city also attended the exhibition to learn more about art.

Zakhele Hlabisa, who is a visual artist, said he was excited to take part in the event and showcase his work.

He said art has become a luxury purchase as many people are just trying to survive. It has become hard for them to buy artwork.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has deprived me of my livelihood and my customers are fighting to survive. I had a development programme scheduled earlier this year that would have given me R25 000 and carried me through the latter part of the year. However, that didn’t happen and it had to be rescheduled,” he said.
