Glenwood teacher seeks homes for pet chinchillas in chucklesome post
The chincillas will be euthanised if suitable homes aren't found in time.
A GLENWOOD teacher is urgently seeking homes for three chinchillas, on behalf of one of the learners in his class.
Nick Bredenkamp took to Facebook on Thursday, January 20 to post an urgent plea as he noted the rodents would be euthanised if suitable homes were not found.
Speaking to the Berea Mail, Brendenkamp said the learner was looking for homes for the chinchillas after his pet gave birth to several offspring.
While Brendenkamp’s request could not be more serious, that didn’t stop him from using a little comic relief with his chucklesome chinchilla post.
“Merry Folk of Glenwood. I seek support in dire times. One of my charges, a blue-eyed boy with golden hair, has put forward a request of no small standing. He has pressed me most taxingly to take up a quest to find new quarters for the offspring of his arboreal companion,” began Bredenkamp in his post.

He went on to explain that chinchillas are tree-dwelling rodents with a similar temperament to a squirrel. Brendekamp noted that the chinchillas would be euthanised tomorrow, January 21, if homes could not be found.
“Should you wish to add a gallant companion to your hearth and home, please contact me with the utmost urgency. My student’s matriarch has struck the death knell, and on the morrow, all three shall find their way to eternal slumber,” he said.

While some social media users commented on the post and raised their concerns about the care of the chinchillas, Brendenkamp said he would ensure the chinchillas found a well-equipped home. Brendenkamp told the Berea Mail that he previously worked as a game ranger and has experience in conservation work.
“I am quite picky. I’d like to make sure the person who takes them has the right facilities. You need to have a decent-sized cage and have experience taking care of pets – ideally someone who has raised dogs or cats. A chinchilla lives for about about 10 years, so it’s quite a commitment,” he said.
