Local security team helps police nab armed robbers

This week a supermarket on Brickfield Road was robbed by armed men, police and local security forces worked together to secure arrests.

URBAN Defence Control Room received a panic alert from Checksave Supermarket on Brickfield Road on Wednesday, March 9, tactical members and armed response were immediately dispatched.

According to a statement released by Urban Defence, team members arrived at the supermarket where they established that an armed robbery had occurred and four suspects had fled in a white Nissan Almera and one other suspect had fled using a public taxi.

The security team then embarked on a search for the taxi.

In the statement Urban Defence said the taxi was spotted on the N3 Durban bound and they were able to intercept it on the N3 near the Tollgate Bridge, where the suspect was positively identified and was placed under arrest and handed over to Saps.

According to Warrant Officer Nzama of the Mayville SAPS, follow up investigations conducted by Mayville Detectives and Saps District Trio Task Team members on the following morning had proven fruitful and resulted in a further two suspects being arrested.

“The vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime was identified as an Uber with the driver being a part of the gang and the vehicle has been seized,” said Nzama.
