Loving life as a single mom

Musgrave mom, shares what she loves about raising their children in the beautiful suburb, we know as Berea.

WITH  Mother’s Day coming up tomorrow,  May 8,  Berea Mail chats to Musgrave mother, Michela Soukop to find out more about the challenges and joys of being a mother.

Single mother,  Soukop loves the life she has built with her two sons, Levi and Max Soukop-Kieslich.

“I love being a mom of boys. I love everything we do – we are so busy. We have soccer training three times a week and soccer games every weekend at Stella Sports Club. My boys also play golf every weekend,” said Soukop.

While she is a big supporter on the sidelines of the soccer field, she doesn’t play soccer herself, although, the Musgrave mother does join her sons on the green for the odd round of golf.

Before becoming a mother, Soukop studied environmental science and moved to Germany to work for Sasol before taking on a career in intercultural communication.

Having grown up with an Austrian father, Soukop felt at home in Germany and decided to stay there for seven years. During this time she met her ex-husband, who has since returned to Germany after the couple’s divorce. Now she is one of the directors for Soukop Property Group.

“I have an amazing support structure through my family,” she said.

While her children embrace their roots at the German school they attend, Soukop wanted Levi and Max to learn about the diverse range of cultures found in South Africa.

“When I lived in Germany I noticed that different cultural groups live separately. I feel we are privileged as South Africans to be exposed to so many different cultures – you don’t realise until you are away from home,” she said.

As she raises her boys, Soukop is navigating a modern world with changing norms.

“Its such a privilege to raise boys. I think its good that the gender roles we had when we were younger are more relaxed now. Boys can cook, clean, sew and most importantly, boys can cry. As much as our parents were good parents, we have a different generational course to navigate,” said the proud mom.

Her favourite part of motherhood is the cuddles and long chats she enjoys with her sons.
