Suspects in the dock for R6.5mil fraud scheme
The insurance company smelt a rat and reported the matter to Berea SAPS.
TWO suspects will appear in Durban Regional Court for charges of insurance fraud after a Berea-based insurance company reported suspicious activity to SAPS.
Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, said the suspects were served with summons on Tuesday, May 10 and are expected to appear in court on July 5.
According to Mhlongo, the suspects, aged 33 and 45, raised alarm bells when they attempted to claim funds from a R6.4 million life cover policy opened in February 2020.

“Three months later, the 45-year-old suspect submitted a claim alleging that the insured person was dead. The insurance company smelt a rat and investigated the matter. It was discovered that the supposed departed person was alive and a case of fraud was reported at Berea SAPS station,” said Mhlongo.
The case has been handed over to the Hawks team from the Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for further investigation.
