High tea in Berea as residents celebrate the Queen’s historic jubilee
Essenwood resident Kees Grinwis tells Berea Mail why Queen Elizabeth II is an icon in his home.

AN Essenwood resident celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee with high tea today, June 5, laying out a feast fit for royalty.
The historic Platinum Jubilee commemorates the queen’s 70th year in service – an amazing feat for Currie Road resident and tea-party host, Kees Grinwis.
“My mother was from England. We follow the royals and like to celebrate their milestones. For the queen to celebrate 70 years of service is an amazing feat,” he said.
Among his many reasons to admire the queen are the various charitable initiatives she took on.

“The queen certainly started in a man’s world and spent her whole life in service to her community. She’s been through various World Wars and crises within the English government and abroad, which she’s managed to handle incredibly well, with great diplomacy – she’s a real icon,” said Grinwis.

He hosted 60 guests for a garden party, complete with festive bunting, British-themed decorations, including royal memorabilia, and a royal feast of British favourites.

“Our menu included coronation chicken, smoked salmon, cucumber sandwiches, bread and butter pudding, and various cakes as well as tea,” he said.
The tea party was held at Norfolk Hall, a historic Durban home built in 1893 – steeped in British culture itself.
