Take a final selfie with the famous blue couch before it’s shipped off to it’s final home

While many conversations around the July unrest have taken a back seat, the blue San Pablo leather corner couch is still a hot topic.

A YEAR after the July unrest that shook KwaZulu-Natal in 2021, many Durban businesses are looking back on the mass looting that tore through their stores. One such business is a Springfield store, Leather Gallery, home to the infamous blue couch (Pablo).

After a whirlwind year at Leather Gallery, including a tour to Gauteng, the couch is finally leaving the Springfield store. The couch is being moved today, July 7, to the Crescent Shopping Centre in uMhlanga where the community can take selfies and see the couch for the last time before it is shipped off to its final home.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Leather Gallery revealed that the couch will move to its final destination on Sunday, July 10 to a top-secret location that Berea Mail will reveal on the day – stay tuned for more.

The couch became social-media famous last year after a viral video took the internet by storm. In the video, the couch was seen being carried off by looters. It was later recovered, and a lengthy restoration process began. The story of the blue couch is now a permanent fixture on the Leather Gallery’s website.

“Many businesses throughout KZN faced losses worth millions, and Leather Gallery situated in Springfield was one of those. This was when our very well-known Pablo was taken from its home at Springfield and then shortly after, Pablo was spotted roaming the streets of KZN. This was the comic relief KZN and South Africa needed at the time,” reads the site.

It wasn’t long before the public was invited to take a selfie with the couch as it took centre stage at the Leather Gallery’s Springfield showroom. The San Pablo also ‘went on tour’ to Gauteng.

“Gauteng was thrilled to meet him and even had the chance to take pictures with him. Pablo’s travels were quite the adventure, and now, he is known as the most travelled couch Leather Gallery has ever stocked. Well, Pablo is the only couch in South Africa that has managed to gain this much attention on social media,” said Leather Gallery.

After all the fanfare, the couch is finally being donated – and it’s sure to make a great conversation piece in its new home.

“Pablo has been resting at Leather Gallery for this entire year, and now we have decided that it’s time Pablo goes to his forever home. There are some big plans for Pablo in the upcoming weeks. After a long, hard search, we have finally found the perfect home for Pablo – a place where he will be safe and taken care of,” said Leather Gallery.

  • The Couch will be at Shop 122 at The Crescent Shopping Centre over the next few days. The centre is located at No 1, 3 Sunset Crescent, Umhlanga Ridge.
