3 tips to promote social justice in your community

This day reminds each country to build fairer, more equitable societies. South Africa predominantly needs to address gender inequality towards women and the alleged re-emergence of xenophobic attacks.

AS shared by the United Nations (UN) as the globe observes the World Day of Social Justice today, February 20: “Momentum is growing for the concept that advancing social justice should be the central aim guiding all national and international policies. This idea has gained traction among proponents who argue it enables societies and economies to function more cohesively when social justice is prioritised.

“Proposals to advance social justice include improving inclusive and effective governance of work, ensuring employment opportunities and lifelong learning, reforming institutions for fairer labour-market outcomes and extending social protections across people’s lifetimes. An integrated approach across all these areas is touted.”

A local human rights activist, Niqita Pieterson, also shares tips for the public to promote social justice in their communities.

Pieterson believes that this day reminds each country, each year, of the need to build fairer, more equitable societies. “South Africa faces a plethora of challenges regarding gender equality, but the most urgent ones that need to be addressed are feminisation of poverty, the impact of HIV and Aids on women, violence against women and the alleged re-emergence of xenophobic attacks,” she says.

A new global study conducted by Ipsos in collaboration with the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London and International Women’s Day finds the majority of men agree that women won’t achieve equality without their support, but half believe they are expected to do too much to support women’s equality.

The survey was carried out online among adults under 65 across 27 countries, meaning that the numbers for South Africa represent those who regularly access the internet.

Here are three tips shared by Pieterson for the public to promote social justice in their communities:

  • Educate yourself: Start learning about social justice issues in your community, including their historical context, root causes and news from diverse sources.
  • Support under-served communities: Stand in solidarity with vulnerable communities by supporting their organisations, businesses and initiatives.
  • Donate to social justice causes: Volunteer your time and skills, and offer support in tangible ways.
