Children’s home looking for donation of 10 beds

St Martin's Diocesan Home for Children, one of Glenwood's oldest children's homes, is often in need of furniture donations, and they are looking for 10 beds for one of their girls' dormitories.

GLENWOOD’S St Martin’s Diocesan Home for Children is appealing to the public for assistance with bed donations for their girl’s dormitory. President of the home Ishara Poodhun has made an urgent plea for anyone who can assist as the home is financially unable to procure the 10 new beds that it currently needs.

“Our home is old, and we are often in need of new furniture to meet the growing needs of our children. Unfortunately, our budget does not allow us to easily acquire new things as we survive on donations,” said Poodhun.

The home was founded back in 1897, and over the century, it has evolved from being a home for boys to being a home for girls and eventually being a home for both genders, all under the care of the nuns. The nuns eventually left the home under the care of the Anglican Diocese of Natal, who handed the home over to St Martin’s under the condition that they continued running it as a home for children.

The home is a registered non-profit organisation that relies on donations and assistance from the Department of Social Development. “We do receive an incentive from the government, but it is not enough to meet all the needs of running our home while also providing basic necessities for our children,” added Poodhun.

Since the home relies on donations, it hosts fundraisers to supplement their financial needs to keep the home afloat. St Martin’s is hosting a movie night for R50 per ticket on April 27, at their home on 239 Clark Road, Berea, in an effort to raise funds while they look for bed donations.
