Several Durban Central roads to close ahead of Africa’s Travel Indaba

Several Durban roads in the City Centre will be closed by the City for Africa's Travel Indaba set to be hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) from May 13. The temporary road closures will be implemented from today (May 6).

THE eThekwini Municipality has released a statement to notify the public about temporary road closures and traffic disruptions on several routes for the duration of Africa’s Travel Indaba. The temporary road closures will be implemented from today (May 6).

According to the municipality, the following roads will be affected:

  • Walnut Road will be closed to traffic between Bram Fischer Road and Dr AB Xuma Street from Monday, May 6, until Monday, May 20. This roadway will only be used for the exhibition.
  • Other traffic disruptions are expected on the following roads: Stalwart Simelane Road, Samora Machel Street, OR Tambo Parade, Boscombe Terrace and Playfair Road.

“Motorists are urged to use alternative routes during this period,” said the municipality.

The Indaba takes place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) from May 13 to May 16, with over 9 000 delegates from around the world, including high-profile dignitaries, expected to attend. It features 120 small, medium, and micro enterprises in the Hidden Gem Zone, and 26 African countries are participating.

Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said the road closures will ensure smooth proceedings of Africa’s Travel Indaba.

“The deployment of officers around critical areas has been increased during this period. All risk management factors will be implemented as the Indaba attracts high-profile government leaders, delegates, buyers and media from all over the world,” Colonel Zungu said.

eThekwini mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda said the City will be pulling out all the stops to ensure the safety of delegates attending Africa’s Travel Indaba.

“We have a good track record of successfully hosting major events. This is reiterated by the Durban ICC being named Africa’s leading Festival and Events destination by the World Travel Awards for three consecutive years. We urge residents and the hospitality industry to extend a warm welcome to guests as their presence will benefit the City’s economy.”
