Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day with inclusion and empowerment
As we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, the NPO You're Magical is leading by example when it comes to inclusion of people with Down syndrome and other disabilities as they prepare to host a talent show on Saturday at Mitchell Park to mark this special day.
MARCH 21 marks the celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, a day dedicated to promoting inclusion, acceptance, and empowerment of individuals with Down syndrome.
On this significant day, Trudy Chetty, the founder of the non-profit organisation You’re Magical, called on society to honour and recognise the remarkable abilities of people with Down syndrome.
“Individuals with Down syndrome are not just individuals with a condition; they are unique, valuable, and contributing members of our society. They bring so much to the table, and it’s time we acknowledge and celebrate their strengths,” said Chetty.
As part of the celebration for World Down Syndrome Day, the organisation will be hosting a talent show at Mitchell Park, near Florida Road, on Saturday, March 22, from 10:00. Chetty said the aim is to showcase the talent of individuals with Down syndrome and other special needs.
“Your valued time and participation in this worthy cause will be greatly appreciated,” said Chetty. “I’m looking forward to meeting with you and your families.”

She highlighted some of the extraordinary abilities often found in individuals with Down syndrome:
- Creative talents: “Many individuals with Down syndrome have exceptional artistic, musical, or dramatic talents. Their creativity knows no bounds, and they express themselves in the most beautiful ways.”
- Strong memories: “People with Down syndrome often have excellent memory skills, which can help them learn and retain information. Their ability to remember details is truly impressive.”
- Determination and perseverance: “Individuals with Down syndrome are known for their resilience and determination in overcoming obstacles. Their strength in facing challenges is inspiring.”
- Empathy and compassion: “People with Down syndrome often have a strong sense of empathy and can form deep, meaningful relationships. Their capacity for compassion is something we can all learn from.”
- Problem-solving skills: “Many individuals with Down syndrome develop creative problem-solving skills, which can help them adapt to new situations. Their ability to think outside the box is a valuable asset.”
Chetty’s message is a reminder of the importance of inclusion and acceptance. “Let’s come together to create a world where individuals with Down syndrome are empowered and given the opportunities they deserve,” she urges.
