Theft out of motor vehicle suspects nabbed in South Beach

Theft out of vehicles has increased on the Durban beachfront. With the Easter holidays approaching, law enforcement is tightening the screws on criminals.

SUSPECTS, including a car workshop manager, were arrested over the weekend for theft out of motor vehicles in the South Beach area.

Kyle van Reenan of Ensure Security shared, “Ensure Security Urban Regeneration teams were alerted to a suspect wanted in connection for multiple theft of car batteries from parked motor vehicles in the area. Tactical response officers immediately pursued the suspect, apprehending him with the assistance of the Durban Metro Police.
“In a further interview, the suspect revealed that he was sent to steal batteries and other items from cars by a man in the South Beach area. Further investigation led the team to a workshop in Fisher Street, where the battery of the complainant’s motor vehicle was positively identified.
“The workshop manager was placed under arrest for being in possession of stolen property and both men were remanded into the custody of the SAPS for further investigation and processing.”

On the same day there was an attempted theft of a motor vehicle at the Sahara Stadium parking lot. “The suspects had attempted to steal a Nissan Navara. The owners were leaving the India Fair; as they approached their vehicle they noticed three suspects inside. The owner discharged his firearm which led to the suspects fleeing the scene,” reported DG Security.

Mohamed Essa, chairperson of the Beach Patrol Unit North Beach CPF, shared his concerns over the rampant criminal activity.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen a trend of two common types of theft: Theft of motor vehicles and remote jamming. VW Polos have been mostly targeted recently. Remote jamming is a growing concern, and we’re working to address it. SAPS, Durban Metro, private security companies, and the CPF are collaborating to enhance security measures.”
Essa urged the community to be extra vigilant:
– Park in well-lit, secure areas.
– Keep valuables out of sight.
– Don’t leave anything of value in your vehicle.
