SASSA extends gold card validity, suspends issuing of black card

SASSA clients have been assured that their gold cards would still be valid beyond an initially announced deadline. Amidst the rush and several glitches, the South African Reserve Bank is yet to announce the new deadline.

SASSA gold cards are still usable until a deadline is announced by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), the agency announced on Tuesday.
Last year it was announced that physical Cash Payment Points (CPPs) and cash withdrawal of social grants inside Post Offices would be phased out.

SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi revealed, “SASSA has noted the instruction to Postbank to ensure that the SASSA gold card remains active, and that Postbank must honour all transactions on these cards. This instruction by the SARB is to ensure that all gold card beneficiaries who have not yet migrated to the Postbank black card continue to receive their grants seamlessly.

“A new deadline for the termination of the SASSA gold card is expected to be issued by the SARB soon. Whilst discussions are underway between SARB and Postbank, the issuing of the black cards by Postbank at their sites across the country has been suspended indefinitely. SASSA remains hopeful that all beneficiaries will continue to receive their money, while also emphasising the right of beneficiaries to choose any bank of their choice. If such a need arises, they can approach the nearest SASSA local office.”
