Yogis find harmony in practising yoga

Ahead of the 11th International Day of Yoga on Saturday, June 21, at Durban’s Amphitheatre in North Beach, the Sivananda World Peace Foundation hosted launch event on Saturday which was attended by score of yogis in support of the United Nation’s day of celebration for the practice of yoga.

YOGA enthusiasts came from far and wide to be part of the 11th International Day of Yoga launch at Durban’s North Beach on Saturday, April 12.

With the backdrop of the ocean, the yogis and novices were taken through various poses by instructors from the organising body, the Sivananda World Peace Foundation. The launch is the lead-up event to the main International Day of Yoga celebration on Saturday, June 21, at Durban’s Amphitheatre. The president of the foundation, Ishwar Ramlutchman, also known as Prince Mabheka Zulu of the Zulu Royal Household, said it was important to promote the practise of yoga.

He said, “As people we are going through a lot, sometimes you need to sit and calm the mind with meditation. This helps stimulate your body and improves your state of mind.” With age not being a factor in the art of practising yoga, attendants from the young to the elderly stretched and found the rhythm to their inner peace.

Among those in attendance was 67-year-old Nomathemba Nkosi who recently started practising yoga “to ease the pain of aching joints”.
“I’m too old to go to the gym or do rigorous exercises, so yoga is perfect for me,” said Nkosi. “I do not want to be one of those gogos that just sits on the couch and allows the aches and pains to settle in, this is the way that I am keeping active. I’m loving yoga and the social side of it, it’s the perfect pace for me.”

Ramlutchman said the launch was also about promoting social cohesion. “Yoga is for everyone, it brings us together and this is how we must live as a society, in the spirit of togetherness. We must live in harmony with each other, like in yoga be in sync with the mind and soul.” Apart from practising yoga for over an hour, the attendees were treated to entertainment in the form of traditional Indian dancing with nine-year-old Mahathika Veeramani taking to the stage to wow the crowd with her dance moves. The main event will be held on Saturday, June 21, at North Beach.
