Floods continue to batter Durban

Persistent rains continue to cause havoc in eThekwini, flooding roads and homes. This morning several roads were no-go areas with puddles and invisibility causing road accidents and traffic jams. Multiple reports of localised flooding have been received across Durban.

FIRST responders are at various scenes around eThekwini today following heavy rainfall last night continuing into this morning. The damage is visible on roads and homes, and motorists are advised to either keep away or practise caution.

Currently flooded or slowly flooding roads include Alpine Road, N2, N3, M4 South, Avondale Road, Brickfield Road, Umgeni Road, North Coast Road, Higginson Highway, M19, Greyville Bridge, Queen Nandi, and Quarry Road.

“Please exercise extreme caution when driving and avoid attempting to drive through water where the depth is unknown — it could be deeper than it appears and pose a serious danger. Our teams are on the ground monitoring the situation. Drive slowly, switch on your headlights, and maintain a safe following distance at all times.
“With regards to flooding at homes, we urge people to please monitor low-lying houses and be careful. Should any water enter your house and you suspect flooding to occur rather leave the house before it’s too late. Please be aware of your surroundings, for example like a sand bank that may collapse onto your house,” warned Durban Metro Police Services.

ALS Paramedics advises, “With multiple warnings of flooding today, ALS Paramedics would like to urge all motorists to please be cautious in this wet weather. Please ensure your vehicle is in good condition, that you drive with your headlights on to make yourself visible, and you leave a little earlier to accommodate the weather.”

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) said, “The forecast model indicates level 4 disruptive rainfall with widespread showers and rainstorms across KZN from midnight on Friday into Saturday, April 26. The warning includes the eThekwini region.
“Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours. The persistent rainfall may result in the flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements, poor driving conditions, damage to infrastructure, and the destruction of mud-based houses. This alert remains subject to change. The SAWS will update the warning accordingly. ”

The eThekwini Municipality’s Disaster Management Unit and emergency services are reportedly on standby and monitoring forecasts.
“The City advises residents to exercise caution, to stay indoors if possible, and to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary. Residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are advised to take the necessary safety precautions. The public is reminded not to cross swollen rivers and streams.”

In case of emergencies, the public can contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
