Hollywoodbets 10km/ 5km run off to a great start

Five years into the KZN racing calendar, the Durban leg of the Hollywoodbets 10km/ 5km run is becoming the race to beat in the province with a sizeable prize fund and new broadcast deal set to attract runners to the series. The race is scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 31, from Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium.

A NEW finish venue and a broadcast deal with the SABC are some of the new features that were unveiled at the launch of the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km and 5km run which will take place at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on Sunday, August 31.

With over 50% of race entries already snapped up, elite and social runners are in for a treat, according to the organisers who confirmed that the top 10 finishers will earn cash prizes, ranging from R6000 to R37 500. Brett Goodwin, Hollywoodbets Athletics Club manager, said that they are hoping for a field of 10 000 runners for Durban’s fastest race route.

He said, “We always make sure that our runners, elite and social, are taken care of from the goodie bag to the entertainment. Runners must have a fantastic experience, from the smooth registration process to the point when they cross the finish line and put the medal around their neck.”

Learning from previous races, Goodwin said that the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium was chosen as the start and finish venue to heighten the experience. “The stadium environment creates a massive and exciting atmosphere,” he said.

This was also confirmed by Steve Mkasi, president of KZN Athletics, who said that they are encouraged by the growth of the run which began five years ago with 750 to thousands each year. “The move to Kingsmead will definitely draw in a crowd of runners, as well as the contents of the goodie bag,” said Mkasi. He praised the move to Kingsmead: “The facility offers safe parking which has been a problem for race organisers in the province and across the country.”

Manfred Seidler, Hollywoodbets Kingsmead elite runners manager, said that with the growth of road racing in the country they are looking to improve on the series. He announced the return of defending champion Neheng Khatala to “the fast and furious race course” with more names to be confirmed as the date closes in.

“Logistically not much is going to change, we have to do the measurements again of the route. If you are looking for a fast time and an amazing experience then this race is it for you.”

Entries for the race close on Monday, August 18, with race pack collection scheduled for August 29 from 10:00 to 18:00 and August 30 from 10:00 to 16:00 at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium. Tickets can be bought via Webtickets. For more information, contact the race office on 078 286 7927.
