Suspect appears in court for robbing runners of cellphones

While thousands of runners were immersed in the recent ABSA Run Your City 10K, one suspect had a different mission, to steal runners' cellphones. It was not long before she was nabbed and arrested.

TEN-THOUSAND runners graced the Absa Run Your City 10K last Sunday, and while the festive mood engulfed them, one woman had the ulterior motive to steal runners’ cellphones. Unfortunately for her, she was reported and arrested on the spot.

SAPS Durban Central spokesperson, Sgt Zanele Khomo, said that while the police were policing and monitoring the race, they responded to a robbery case and arrested one suspect, aged 57.

“At about 12:30 police responded to a complaint of stolen cellphones during the race. Members proceeded to Durban Station where one cellphone was tracked to. On arrival members swiftly arrested one female who was about to board a bus wearing a branded participant’s red shirt. The suspect was found in possession of three cellphones of which one was identified positively by one of the complainants.

“The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where her bail was denied. She will be back to court in due course for formal bail application,” Khomo said.
