Durban’s summer sailing season sets sail with Twilight Race
Durban’s summer sailing season has officially kicked off with the Point Yacht Club’s popular Twilight Series lighting up the harbour.
DURBAN’S summer sailing season has officially been launched with the traditional Wednesday night Twilight Series setting sail in the harbour.
Leading the way around the course was the yacht Bellissima, whose crew brought both skill and humour to the race. In the spirit of Halloween, the team made a midrace costume change, throwing on white sheets and sunglasses to join the viral Halloween trend while their skeleton mascot, Clover, dangled cheerfully from the boom.
On board the ghost ship, aka Bellissima, was Bryce Bower, Donald Joley, Edrich de Lange, Sophie Thompson, and skipper Luke Wagner. Clover, the “sixth crew member,” was crafted by Umcebo Design, Glenwood’s environmental art studio. With the sails now up for the season, the Point Yacht Club’s Rear Commodores have been hard at work putting together a busy calendar of events for the months ahead.

The season will conclude with a milestone celebration — the 50th anniversary of the MSC Week regatta in July. First raced in Durban Bay in 1976, MSC Week has grown into one of South Africa’s premier offshore sailing events. Following a successful hosting of the Marriott Mirror Worlds in April, the Point Yacht Club is already looking to the future. Preparations are underway for the club’s 135th birthday celebrations in 2027, as well as hosting the Flying 15 World Championships in the coming years.
The club continues to welcome new sailors to experience the joy of being on the water. As part of its “Bums on Boats” initiative, the Twilight Series offers beginners the chance to learn the ropes alongside seasoned sailors.
