Deadline looms for switch to new vehicle licence plates

KZN motorists have until November 30 to switch to the new licence plate system or face fines.

DRIVING with old licence plates will become an offence after the migration deadline of November 30, and KZN motorists will will be fined as the licence number will be deemed invalid.

Motorists are urged to visit their nearest Licensing Offices where the old number plate can be changed, while those renewing their car licences will have theirs changed automatically.

KZN Department of Transport introduced the new licence numbering system for the province as it was running out of new numbers, and to align the province with the national numbering system.

“Failure to migrate timeously will lead to members of public getting fined as this will become a violation of the National Road Traffic Act,” the Department said.

Motorists are also advised to inform their car insurer of the change in licence number in the case of needing to make a claim,  their bank if the vehicle is still being paid off, or if they have a petrol card, and their tracking company, if applicable.
