eThekwini extends debt relief programme until January 2026

The municipality's EXCO has approved the extension of the popular Debt Relief Programme, giving residents and businesses more time to benefit from a 50% arrears write-off and flexible repayment terms.

THE eThekwini Municipality has announced the extension of its special Debt Relief Programme until January 31, 2026, offering residents and businesses additional time to take advantage of the initiative aimed at easing financial pressure.

Approved by the City’s executive committee (EXCO), the extended programme began on November 1 and will end on January 31, 2026. During this period, applicants will received a 50% write-off on arrear debt accumulated up to January 31, 2025.

Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the extension was approved by EXCO in response to the high level of demand and the positive impact the programme has had on customers. She said it’s an opportunity for those who missed the initial window to come forward and make arrangements to clear their arrears.

“Customers who are unable to pay their arrears in full may do so through instalment plans, provided the debt is fully settled by 31 January 2026,” said Sisilana. “Additionally, customers that have accumulated debt from 1 February 2025 to 30 June 2025, must settle the outstanding debt.”

She added, “If they cannot afford to do so in one payment, they can enter an arrangement with the municipality that will end on June 30, 2026. No interest will be charged.”
