Retired psychotherapist blends treatment with arts
Dr Van der Walt is blending psychotherapy with arts in both psychiatric patients and the general public. The results, he says, have been amazing, seeing a changed behavior and new-found self-esteem.
AFTER decades of tireless work as a psychotherapist, Dr Hendrik van der Walt had to retire, admittedly against his will. His mind and body still wanted to carry on.
Having worked in Gauteng and Durban hospitals and clinics, his talent and passion for the arts never left his side. He admits that he is fascinated by patients’ stories and witnessing the behavior change; however the arts render a lighter space he enjoys. With retirement occupying his time, he decided to blend his two loves, psychotherapy and the arts.
“I have so much experience in both arts and psychotherapy, and a lot of time on my hands, and of course, my creativity still buzzes,” he said.
A few months ago, he started an expressive arts therapy class with a group of psychiatric patients in Morningside, which he holds with a small group once a week.

“It’s been amazing, patients enjoy the classes, and one can see a change in the way they see themselves and others. They’ve become less timid and more assertive. They have exhibited a great amount of confidence.”
The classes involve paintings and drawing, live music, imagination techniques, grounding, sounds and gestures, and stories. Van der Walt said this lights up the patients; they interact freely with one another while analysing each other’s artwork and discussing topics.
With this positive feedback, Van der Walt is expanding the classes to the general public, besides psychiatric patients. “We will soon start the same classes in Stellawood, and are inviting interested adults to come aboard. No creative talent or skills required.

“The classes have benefits for the general public. Every person can always change their behavior, become mature, be more assertive, and can always learn new things about themselves. This is also a beneficial way of socialising and overcoming loneliness. All this in a safe space,” he added.
The classes will be held every Monday or Friday between 10:00 and 12:30, with a fee from R20 or R50 per session.
