New Victory Foods named KZN’s best bunny chow

The search for KZN’s best bunny chow is over. New Victory Foods crowned Durban’s top bunny chow in the 2025 Bunny Chow Barometer Challenge.

THE search for KwaZulu-Natal’s best bunny chow has come to an end, with New Victory Foods from Phoenix taking the coveted title of Durban’s top bunny chow.

The Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) Bunny Chow Barometer Challenge finale took place at Blue Lagoon on Saturday. A delighted and still visibly shocked Keoshen Govender of New Victory Foods said winning the challenge meant far more than just a victory. “This goes much deeper than winning a competition for us,” said Govender. “We’ve travelled a long way to get here, and our staff have been with us throughout this journey.”

This year marked the team’s 15th attempt at the competition. In previous editions, New Victory Foods had consistently placed in the top three. “I’m super excited for my staff, who put so much effort and passion into what we do,” Govender said. “The early mornings and late nights have paid off. We worked really hard to get here today, we ticked all the boxes, and that’s why being named the winners means so much.”

The challenge has become a staple on the province’s culinary calendar, drawing strong community participation and spotlighting the small businesses that make KZN’s food culture unique. New Victory Foods received R50 000 in prize money, while the second place PnP Express Waterloo took home R30 000 and third place PnP Express Chatsworth walked away with R20 000.

Richard Willington, regional sales manager at CCBSA in KZN, applauded the top 10 finalists, who were judged on a detailed set of criteria, including taste, in-store service and the final presentation of the bunny chow.

He said the competition reflects the heart of KZN passion, community and creativity. “Through initiatives like this, we support local food outlets and create opportunities that go beyond business,” said Willington. “Partnering with customers for growth is about walking alongside our partners, celebrating their success and ensuring we all meet consumer needs and thrive together.”
