A Legacy of hope: Open Air School marks 105 inspiring years

For more than a century, Open Air School in Berea has empowered learners with disabilities to overcome challenges and achieve academic success. Now celebrating 105 years, the institution marked the milestone with pride, inspiration — and a remarkable 100% pass rate in 2025.

FOR 105 years Open Air School in Berea has stood as a beacon of hope for learners with disabilities, allowing them to rise up and shine on various stages across South Africa.

The school and the thousands of learners who have walked its hallways and sat in its classrooms were celebrated on Thursday, February 12. Learners, educators, parents, and supporters of the special needs educational institution filled the hall to mark this momentous occasion.

She said Open Air’s 100% pass rate in 2025 and over 95% in bachelor passes was a reflection of the hard work of learners and educators and the support of parents, donors and supporters like Professor Abdul Kader and Ahmed Paruk who were part of the celebration.

Kader said it felt good to be part of the event and being among the learners. “I saw the energy, courage and resilience that comes out of the environment. It’s what we try to teach in corporate education, the resilience which learners in this particular environment live with every day.

“You understand it better than anyone else and that is the brilliance of being part of this school. You are an ideal candidate to be in a work environment because you have been through it all,” said Kader.
