Urgent meeting called as Stella Park Bowling Club faces closure
An urgent community meeting has been called to discuss the possible closure of the century-old Stella Park Bowling Club in Umbilo due to severe financial strain.
* Update – We have been informed that this meeting is in fact a Special General Meeting of Stella Park Bowling Club and, in accordance with the Club Constitution, attendance is restricted to members of the Club only.
AN urgent meeting has been called for today (March 16) to discuss the future of the Stella Park Bowling Club in Umbilo which faces possible closure as a result of severe financial strain.
Lara Richards, secretary of the Stella Park Bowling Club, said the century-old club has been struggling without a liquor licence which has put them in the red. A meeting with stakeholders and residents will be held at the premises on 337 Bartle Road at 17:00 to decide the future of the club.
“We are calling on residents to come out in their numbers and attend the meeting, because the closure of the Stella Park Bowling Club will affect everyone in the community and not just the members,” said Richards.

On the agenda at the meeting will be the issue surrounding the delay in Stella Park Bowling Club’s Liquor licensing, whether to keep the club open and surviving with new ideas, support and help from residents until the liquor licence is sorted, or to close the doors for good.
“As members we have been stepping up to keep the club afloat and pay salaries for staff and security, but it has reached a point where we can no longer keep doing this,” said Richards.
“We are asking for residents to help keep the club’s doors open, any assistance is welcomed. It would be extremely sad and damaging for the community if the club was to close its doors. As we have seen other places that were forced to close, the homeless would move in and the club will become neglected and derelict. Certainly nothing positive can come about if Stella Bowling Club closes its doors for good.”
The meeting will begin at 17:00 at the Stella Bowling Club at 337 Bartle Road, Umbilo. Residents are encouraged to attend.
