FOR the past six months, Colonel Mandla Ntuli has been steering one of South Africa’s most strategic policing environments. A home to residents, businesses, the harbour, and Durban’s iconic beachfront, which welcomes thousands of local and international visitors throughout the year.

In the midst of challenges such as drug dealing, prostitution, and the presence of undocumented foreigners, Ntuli asserts that their approach will be intelligence-driven, lawful, and community-focused.

“Our immediate priority is to increase high-visibility policing through foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrols, particularly along the beachfront, promenade, and identified crime hotspots. We will intensify targeted operations against drug trafficking and organised criminal networks through intelligence-led investigations, while working closely with specialised SAPS units.

“We will also strengthen partnerships with the eThekwini Metro Police, Home Affairs, municipal law enforcement, business forums, CPFs, and the private security sector to ensure a co-ordinated response to illegal activities. Where undocumented foreign nationals are identified during lawful operations, we will work with the relevant government departments to ensure the appropriate legal processes are followed.”

With 26 years in the police force, his appointment to Point was an honour, he said.
“I also understood the immense responsibility that comes with leading one of the country’s busiest and most diverse policing precincts. I saw the appointment not simply as a promotion, but as a call to serve with integrity, accountability, and compassion.”

He promises zero tolerance for dirty cops, while rendering support for honest officers. And despite challenges faced by the station, Ntuli sees a silver lining.

“I have also identified many positives. The Point precinct has dedicated and experienced police officers. There are active partnerships with other stakeholders which provide a strong foundation for collaborative crime prevention. My focus will be on building on these strengths.

“We want residents, tourists, and businesses to feel safe and secure, and we are committed to creating an environment where families and visitors can enjoy the area without fear,” Ntuli concluded.
