AN Umbilo man is reportedly fighting for his life after a shooting incident last night (Wednesday, July 29)

ALS Paramedics’ Garrith Jamieson said, “Just before 18:00 on Wednesday, ALS Paramedics were called by Homeland Security to assist with a male who had been shot numerous times and was in a critical condition on the footbridge between the M7 and Oliver Lee Drive in Umbilo.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find the man believed to be in his thirties in a critical condition, with first aid being administered to him. Advanced Life Support Paramedics took over the scene. They worked to stabilise the man who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and legs before rushing him off to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required.”

Homeland Security SA was called to the scene by concerned residents. The victim was was reportedly walking from Southway Mall, crossing the pedestrian bridge to Umbilo Park. He was in a work uniform. He was shot four times, once in each leg and twice in the abdomen, according to the security company.

“Fortunately, Homeland had started a Community Ambulance Fund, whereby donations are used to acquire private ambulances for serious medical conditions, because the State ambulances may take longer to arrive. The man was rushed to the hospital and is in a critical condition.”

Homeland Security SA shared their concerns regarding the bridge in question. “The pedestrian bridge between Southway Mall and Umbilo Park has been the scene of numerous robberies and violent crimes over recent months.

“Homeland Security SA has worked closely with SAPS and other roleplayers by sharing intelligence and information relating to criminal activity in the area. Despite these ongoing efforts, the bridge remains a high-risk area, particularly during the late afternoon and evening, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately,” Homeland Security SA said.

The events leading up to the shooting are unknown and SAPS are investigating further.
