Early morning gunshots hit North Beach community

An early morning couple’s dispute resulted in assault with grievous bodily harm and attempted murder on Oliver Tambo Parade.

AT about 03:00 today (May 25) residents of North Beach were woken up by multiple loud bangs of gunshots, followed by screams and a screeching car.

Local patrollers, DG Protection Services, later reported that the shooting incident took place in front of Grosvenor Court, where one man was injured, and one woman was assaulted. A white VW Golf fled thereafter.

North Beach CPF chairperson, Mahomed Essa, reported, “The shooting incident occurred following a domestic altercation involving a suspect from the Elangeni Hotel area. It is alleged that the suspect followed his partner after an argument, and several shots were fired.”

Essa warned, “A firearm is a serious responsibility, not a tool for anger, domestic disputes, or use under the influence.”

Durban Central Police confirmed the investigation of the cases. “We are investigating two cases of attempted murder as well as a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after an incident which took place at Snell Parade.

“It is alleged that an argument ensued between a male and a female who are reportedly in a relationship. The male allegedly assaulted the female, and when a passerby attempted to diffuse the situation, he was also assaulted.

No arrests have been made as yet, investigations are ongoing,“ said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza.

It is said that the male victim sustained injuries on his foot. Both victims are recovering in hospital.
