UPDATE: Police diffuse hostage situation at Berea fast-food restaurant

The hostages incurred minor injuries and were emotionally traumatized while the alleged hostage taker was found by paramedics with moderate injuries.

THE three people who allegedly had been taken hostage at a popular fast food restaurant in Berea Road have been freed.

According to Advance Life Support Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, at around 13:30 today ALS Paramedics received numerous calls of an alleged hostage situation at a popular fast-food restaurant on Berea Road, just after Cleaver Road.

“We arrived to find SAPS and multiple security companies already in attendance and made contact with the necessary SAPS authorities. A plan was put into place by SAPS and paramedics were asked to standby and the police devised a plan to penetrate the restaurant and overcome the situation,” said Jamieson.

The spokesperson said paramedics were stationed at both sides of the fast-food establishment and when the penetration took place at 16:30, paramedics were asked to enter and treat the alleged victims, as well as the alleged perpetrators for injuries.

“Paramedics had found that the three hostages had sustained minor injuries and more of an emotional injury and the hostage taker had sustained moderate injuries. The four people are currently being treated by paramedics before they will be transported to various Durban Hospitals. The events leading up to the incident are unknown at this time,” said Jamieson.
