WATCH: Riverside municipal dump overflows onto pavement

Piles of uncollected rubbish have been disposed of outside the municipal dump, covering both sides of the pavement.

THE ongoing strike action by some eThekwini Municipality workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has caused havoc for service delivery around the City.

On Monday, City mayor Mxolisi Kaunda called for employees engaged in the strike action to return to work or face dismissal.

Several communities have been without water and electricity for several days while refuse collection has also been severely.

The strike, which began last Tuesday (February 27), has also seen the closure of all municipal dumps.

That has led to piles of rubbish being disposed of outside the Riverside dump on Roadhouse Crescent, taking up both sides of the pavement as well as extending onto Riverside Road.

It has also triggered more illegal dumping with building rubble, household furniture and other items being thrown onto the massive pile of rubbish which has now covered an entire lane of the road.

Ward 36 councillor Shontel de Boer has urged residents and businesses to contain their refuse inside their properties until further notice.

On Monday, KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said there has been continued intimidation and attacks on non-striking employees, resulting in the City’s failure to respond to faults and restore basic services.

The City has suspended 20 employees connected with the strike, and 13 workers were arrested last week on Electron Road in Springfield Park.
