Captain Poobalan Naidoo says that robberies and burglaries are regularly occurring in the Berea area, and residents should be on high alert.

CAPTAIN Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS says that the Berea SAPS have been receiving multiple reports of property theft and is advising residents to stay on the look-out for criminals and safeguard their property.

“Robberies and other property crimes are a major concern at SAPS, but together, we can reduce crime. Here are some safety tips to help residents keep themselves, their homes and belongings safe,” said Naidoo.

1. Criminals thrive on opportunity, and the least we can do is eliminate these opportunities.

2. When walking on the road after dark, kindly walk in groups and/or, where possible, in well-lit areas.

3. Limit carrying valuables, such as laptops, cellphones and large amounts of cash, on you when on the road.

4. The best possible place to be after dark is in your home – sitting outside your home with one or two people leaves you vulnerable to the criminal who’s lurking and looking for a chance. Criminals have been exploiting these easy targets who sit outside their homes, chatting, by holding them up with a firearm and asking them to take them into their homes, and then they are robbed of all their cellphones and valuables.
