eThekwini Municipality hosts Homeless Open Day

The eThekwini Municipality is hosting a Homeless Open Day at Albert Park this morning, offering services such as drug rehabilitation services, health services, ID applications and family reconciliation.

IN an effort to give visibility to the large homeless community in Durban, the eThekwini Municipality is hosting a Homeless Open Day to assist members of the homeless community by partnering with NPOs, offering various services to them at the one-stop aid initiative. This will take place at Albert Park in Durban Central today (April 5).

According to a statement released by the municipality, the campaign is being hosted to provide support to those who find themselves living on the streets and to ultimately eradicate homelessness. It will be hosted by eThekwini Municipality mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda.

“The Homeless Open Day is a one-stop shop that will bring services to homeless people so those who still need to be assisted can get assistance on the spot. Service providers will offer drug rehabilitation services, health services and ID applications, and those who want to be reunited with their families will also be assisted on the day,” said the municipality.

The Open Day further intends to mobilise stakeholders, including NGOs, to work in an integrated manner to reduce homelessness by tackling the various social issues that emanate from this challenge.

“This will positively contribute towards upholding the Human Rights principles enshrined in the South African Constitution,” said the City.
