Fun day out for disabled community members

The event was organised by Yster Smal from Ramcat Fishing, who said his main goal when organising the event was for the men and their loved ones to have an exciting day out.

LOCAL men from the non-profit organisation, Ramcat Fishing, made up of a group of retired military veterans and members of the disabled community, gathered at the Durban View Restaurant at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Easter Sunday to enjoy a fun day out with their loved ones.

The event was organised by Yster Smal from Ramcat Fishing, who said his main goal when organising the event was for the men and their loved ones to have an exciting day out. “When you are wheelchair-bound, you hardly ever come out and enjoy activities. That goes for their caregivers, as well – when the occasion does come to go out, it can be a huge task and locations must be wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately, not all venues are accommodating.”

Smal says he was thrilled when he found out that the restaurant at Greyville Racecourse was wheelchair accessible and immediately reached out to the staff to help him arrange something special for the men of Ramcat Fishing. “We invited the men and their families to spend the day here. There is a lovely buffet, and they can gamble and socialise. Some of these men are from Durban but have never been to the racecourse.”

A group of 40 people, comprised of 20 disabled men and their families, enjoyed a day of entertainment at the local event, and Smal said he couldn’t be happier.

Smal also announced the date of the next Ramcat Fishing community fishing event, which raises funds for the organisation. The event provides members of the disabled community with an opportunity to fish and enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment, where Ramcat volunteers help their guests bait, cast and reel in catches and release them back into the sea.

“This year, the event will be hosted at the KwaZulu-Natal Cruise Terminal on Sunday, June 9,” said Smal.
