Margaret Mncadi Avenue sewer pipeline maintenance underway

Maintenance work is underway to remove sand and other foreign objects that have made their way into the 3.5 km sewer pipeline along Margaret Mncadi Avenue, wreaking havoc along the Durban CBD and harbour.

IT is expected to take up to four weeks for the eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Unit to maintain and unclog the sewage drains and manholes along Margaret Mncadi Avenue, with work having commenced today, November 8.

Municipal spokesperson Mdu Ncalane said the maintenance work will include removing sand and other foreign objects clogging the 3.5 km sewer pipeline and manholes on Margaret Mncadi Avenue. He said the wastewater that flows through this pipeline comes from parts of the Durban CBD, Berea, and Umbilo.

“The work is necessary as the clogging of foreign materials is resulting in blockages and overflows into the harbour at Lavender Creek. Residents and businesses are urged not to misuse infrastructure as their behaviour has long-term consequences,” added Ncalane.

The four-week-long maintenance is expected to cause congestion and motorists are being advised that the centre lane of the eastbound carriageway of Margaret Mncadi Avenue, between Joe Slovo Street and Dorothy Nyembe Street, will be closed to traffic from November 8 to 22.

In addition to the closure of the centre lane, there will be no kerbside parking available in the affected section for this period.
