Hefty fines for illicit goods, expired foods in Durban Central
Police in the Durban CBD continue to unravel the plague of illicit goods and unscrupulous business operations in their bid to enforce good practices.
YESTERDAY, eThekwini District Commissioner Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa and Deputy Commissioner Winnie Zama of Durban Metro Police spearheaded a cross-cutting multi-disciplinary intelligence-driven operation spanning the entire Central Business District (CBD) of Durban.
The operational strategy encompassed all critical government and municipal departments focusing on the clarion call to eliminate all triggers that may lead to bacterial contracted ailments.

Department senior officials and staff from SAPS, metro police, the Department of Economic Development, the Border Management Authority, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Health, Environmental Health, the Liquor Authority, Business License, DSW Building Inspectorate, Area Based Management and various other line-function departments focused on compliance and regulatory aspects of all Health and Safety standards, ensuring that conformity was adhered to and where there was contravention or non-compliance, hefty fines and confiscation of illicit goods and expired food products were effected.

On-the-spot disposal of unsuitable and prohibited products was compacted, and large quantities of illicit products were seized.
Major General Kheswa said, “These operations will continue, and I hope it will send a clear message and warning to the business sector, whether big or small businesses, that the sale of products that are expired or not correctly labelled and the harbouring of undocumented employees will be decisively dealt with.”
