Suspects nabbed for armed robbery on Musgrave Road

Community members are advised to increase vigilance as the shopping season begins as criminals are increasingly targeting shoppers during this time.

YESTERDAY morning, Berea SAPS captured suspects who robbed a pedestrian on Musgrave Road of cash and other belongings.

“The complainant was walking on Musgrave Road on top of the bridge with her sister when two unknown males approached them with firearms. They took her handbag containing cash of R2 000 and a Nokia cellphone valued at R1 500, as well as her sister’s passport, and fled. They ran towards Gladys Mazibuko Road,” explained Captain Poobalan Naidoo of Berea SAPS.

SAPS members in the vicinity, together with DRK security officials, reportedly gave chase and apprehended the suspects.

“Her cellphone, which she later identified as hers, was recovered from the suspects. Other belongings were thrown on the road by the suspects while running and were not recovered. Also found on the suspects were an illegal firearm (9mm Beretta), which was altered at the barrel and firing pin, and a blank firearm with seven live, blank rounds of ammunition. The suspects were detained at Berea SAPS and charged with armed robbery.”

Naidoo advises:
• Try walking with the crowd.
• Do not carry large sums of cash.
• Always be vigilant.
• Limit your shopping per outing.

The suspects appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
