Berea SAPS gives safety tips for the festive season

Berea SAPS is urging residents to be cautious this festive season and offered some safety tips to help residents avoid being victims of crime.

BEREA SAPS is urging residents to be cautious this festive season as criminal activity is at an all-time high during this time of the year. According to Berea SAPS captain Poobalan Naidoo, during the festive season, people are in a relaxed mode, and this is the time when the criminal strikes.

“People tend to neglect their property, thinking their belongings will be safe. Criminals are opportunistic, so when the criminal sees an opportunity, he will strike. Always be alert and safeguard your property. Take necessary steps to avoid your property being taken,” said Naidoo.

“The management and staff of Berea SAPS would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a blessed and prosperous New Year,” said Naidoo.

The captain provided the following safety tips for residents to follow:

  • Do not drink and drive.
  • When at parties, do not leave your drinks unattended as they can be spiked.
  • When leaving a restaurant or party late at night, try not to walk alone to your vehicle.
  • When at a restaurant, try not to leave your wallet and cellphone on the table unattended as they can be stolen.

  • Remove a detachable radio, the radio’s face and CDs when leaving your car parked.
  • Have your keys ready in your hand as you approach the car, especially if they are difficult to find in a bag.
