KZN geared up for 2025 academic year
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is working closely with law enforcement and security services to ensure the safety and security of learning material already delivered to schools ahead of the 2025 academic year which begins on Wednesday, January 15.
THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education (KZN DoE) has vowed to leave no learner behind as they make the final preparations to ensure that all Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) required to kick-start the 2025 academic year are delivered safely and in time to schools across the province.
KZN DoE spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, said the department has delivered close to 100% of the learning and reading materials required for when schools open their classroom doors to learners on Wednesday, January 15. He said some schools will receive their reading materials when schools open, citing security concerns.
Mahlambi said, “The department has successfully delivered almost 99% of textbooks to schools across the province of KwaZulu-Natal, 76% of stationery, benefitting learners in 4174 schools, and the delivery process remains on track to be completed by January 10. However, due to serious security challenges at certain schools, delivery to these affected areas will be undertaken between January 12 and 17.”
He added, “The department is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of both personnel and resources during this period. Furthermore, the department is actively addressing issues related to the Norms and Standards allocation for schools to ensure that all learning environments are equipped to provide quality education.”

He said, “We are focused on delivering the necessary resources to enable teaching and learning to take place on the first day of school. Our priority remains the success and well-being of every learner in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.”
On Tuesday, January 14, Hlomuka is expected to announce the results of the Class of 2024 at the Durban ICC where he will confirm the top matriculants in the province. The department is hoping to surpass its previous year pass mark of 86.4%, aiming for 90% overall.
