E-hailing driver in dock for armed robbery in Umbilo
An unsuspecting victim was left traumatised when a group of men, posing as an e-hailing service, robbed her of her belongings while she was standing outside her place of work.

A 23-year-old man, employed as an e-hailing service driver, appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week for armed robbery. Police are on the lookout for four more suspects.
“On Sunday between 12:00 and 13:00, the complainant was standing outside her place of work, a salon on Bartle Road. According to the complainant, a white Suzuki with five occupants stopped in front of her and two of the occupants jumped out of the vehicle, pointed at her with a firearm and demanded her belongings, they then jumped back into the car and drove away.”

A case of armed robbery was opened at Umbilo SAPS and the vehicle was traced to the owner.
“According to the owner, he had employed the 23-year-old suspect as a driver for e-hailing services and on the said day, the vehicle was with the suspect,” explained Umbilo SAPS spokesperson, Captain Pumzile Biyana.
While the search continues for four more suspects, police urge all employers to do a background check on their employees before employing them.
Police advise:
- Walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group, if possible.
- Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers or have them displayed in an accessible area.
- Know all emergency numbers.
- Trust your instinct.
- Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them.
- Be on the lookout for strange cars or people.
- Always be vigilant. Never walk around alone and don’t talk to strangers.
- Do not carry large sums of cash.
- Try walking with the crowd.
