Clarence Primary School in Durban celebrated its 120th anniversary with a vibrant event that brought together learners, teachers, staff, and the community. The festivities included a giant “120” formation, a cake, 1200 cupcakes, colourful balloons, and uplifting music and singing.

CLARENCE Primary School in Durban celebrated a remarkable milestone this week when it marked its 120th anniversary with a vibrant event that united learners, teachers, staff, and the wider community.

Founded in 1905, the school has stood as a beacon of education and unity for generations. The day’s festivities began with a striking formation on the school field, where hundreds of learners lined up to create a giant “120” — a powerful symbol of Clarence Primary’s enduring legacy.

Teachers joined hands behind them, embodying the school’s tradition of support and togetherness. The school’s deputy principal, Patience Ncwane, expressed deep pride in the day’s significance.

“Watching our learners come together like this was truly moving. Today isn’t just a celebration of our past; it’s a promise for our future,” Ncwane said. “Clarence Primary has always been about more than lessons — its about community, friendship, and the joy of learning together.”

A highlight of the day was the unveiling of a spectacular cake, decorated in the school colours of red, white, and blue, generously sponsored by Avonmore Spar. Learners enjoyed 1200 cupcakes and refreshing ice cream treats, while 120 colourful balloons floated across the grounds, adding a festive touch.

Music and song brought the crowds together as the community joined voices for the South African national anthem, the school song, and a spirited ‘Happy Birthday’ chorus. Reflecting on the day, Ncwane added, “We honour our rich heritage, but we’re also looking ahead. The energy and unity we saw shows that Clarence Primary’s best years are still to come.”

The celebration ended with a joyful dance party, ensuring the school’s 120th birthday will be remembered for years to come.
