VIDEO: Pilot missing after aircraft crashes into sea near Suncoast

What was supposed to be a great conclusion to an international aviation conference at Suncoast turned into a disaster when an aircraft that was one of the showcase planes crashed into the sea.

A co-ordinated search operation is underway to locate a missing pilot whose aircraft crashed into the water near Suncoast Casino in Durban this afternoon.

The pilot was reportedly participating in an aerial manoeuvre as part of an airshow for the third ICAO NGAP Global Summit (NGAP/3) at Suncoast.

The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC) was alerted, and first responders including SAPS divers, Metro SAR divers, Netcare 911 and NSRI teams swiftly arrived at the scene.

Cllr Ernie Smith who was watching the plane sky tricks shared, “According to a witness the plane started to fly lower and then it crashed into the water and split into two. The pilot is yet to be extracted. Divers are still on the search.”

The pilot is believed to have been the sole occupant of the aircraft.

The eThekwini Municipality has temporarily closed Battery Beach until further notice following a tragic aircraft accident this afternoon.
