Kidnapping victim rescued in Durban, four suspects arrested

Four suspects were arrested for kidnapping after SAPS traced them from Durban CBD to Mayville, rescuing a 38-year-old victim.

FOUR suspects have been arrested for kidnapping following a daring rescue mission by SAPS members at a property in Mayville after following the trail from a shop on St George’s Street in Durban CBD on Monday (March 2).

According to KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza the alarm was raised by the 38-year-old victim’s family on Sunday in Paddock. He said police officers, who are members of the Counter Narcotics Unit and Provincial Organised Crime Threat Desk, began investigating and soon received vital information about the suspects.

“The suspects were inside one of the retail shops on St George’s Street in Durban,” said Magwaza. “The team summoned the assistance of the Durban Central Crime Prevention who were in close proximity of the suspects’ location to corner them before they could get away. Three suspects were successfully arrested.”

A search of their vehicle allegedly led to the recovery of two bank cards as well as a cellphone sim card belonging to the victim. “Further investigations led police to Mayville where the victim was found alive and to the arrest of the fourth suspect,” said Magwaza.

The suspects aged between 21 and 38 years were detained and charged for kidnapping. They are expected to appear in court on Wednesday (March 4).
