THE search for a missing Umsinga learner who disappeared while swimming at New Beach on Friday has come to a tragic end following the recovery of a body south of Addington Beach this morning (May4).

The news was confirmed by eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba, who on Friday joined the search and rescue teams at South Beach in hopes of finding the learner.

The learner’s body was discovered by lifeguards, Metro Police, SAPS Search and Rescue, and the Coastal Patrol Unit, and handed to the police. “The family of the deceased has been notified, and arrangements are being made for them to view the body,” said Xaba.

He commended everyone involved in this difficult recovery operation. According to the City, the deceased was among a group of 18 learners who went swimming at a non-bathing beach on Friday.

The group was spotted in the water by passing lifeguards who immediately sprang into action. They intervened and successfully rescued 17 of the learners.

One youngster was swept away in the current, leading to a search which ended this morning. “We once again convey our condolences to the family of the deceased and hope that they will now be able to find closure,” said Xaba.

He cautioned the public against swimming at non-bathing beaches and during late hours when lifeguards are off duty.
