Severe weather warning has eThekwini disaster teams on standby
A Level 4 warning from the SAWS has prompted disaster teams to brace for flooding, damaging winds and hazardous road conditions.
ETHEKWINI Disaster Management is on high alert following a Level 4 severe weather warning issued for the municipality by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for today (May 5).
The forecast by the SAWS warns of “widespread and severe thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal, with the eThekwini region expected to be significantly affected”.
Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the city is bracing itself for heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail which poses a serious risk to life, property, and infrastructure.
“Anticipated thunderstorm may result in flooding on roads, bridges, and low-lying areas. Poor visibility and slippery road surfaces are expected to make driving hazardous,” said Sisilana.

“Residents in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are urged to take the necessary precautions to ensure safety. The public is reminded not to attempt crossing swollen rivers or streams, particularly where water levels exceed ankle height.”
She said Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert, ready to respond to any incidents while urging motorists to exercise caution on the road.
“Reduce your speed and maintain safe following distances on wet and slippery roads. Where possible, residents are encouraged to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” added Sisilana.
